OSAP can be a panacea for Ontario students who want to go to college but do not have the financial means to do so. If you are a resident of Ontario, Canada, and you are looking for different ways to finance your education, you need to know as much as possible about the Ontario Student Assistance Program, also known as OSAP. This program is administered through the government of Ontario, and provides Canada students with grants, loans, and scholarships, which are awarded based on financial need.

This Ontario OSAP student loans program is funded through the provincial government of Ontario, as well as the Canadian federal government. Students who win these awards can use the funds to help pay for tuition, fees, books, supplies, transportation, and living expenses while they are attending a post secondary school in Canada. The OSAP Ontario student loans that are available through this program are interest free for the student, up until six months after their graduation. Repayment of the loan, including interest, begins six months after you either graduate or leave your program of study without graduating. The interest that is payable on the line is equal to the prime rate, plus an additional 1%.

Before you are considered for a Ontario OSAP student loan, the information entered on the application that you fill out is used to determine whether or not you are eligible for grants or scholarships that are available. The OSAP student loan only comes into question after you have been either approved or denied for other funding – but loans are available even if you are not approved for other funding.

In addition to Ontario student loans available from the Ontario Government, you are also applying for student loans that are available from the Canadian Government. All of the grants through this program come through the Canadian Government as well, and they include grants for low income students, middle income students, disabled students, students with dependents, and part time students.

The amount of funding that you are eligible for through OSAP ranges from $210 to $560 per week that you are in school, and the actual amount that you receive depends on the program of study and school that you are attending, your marital status, whether or not you are a dependent or have dependents, and the amount of funds that you can contribute to your education. While you are attending school, as a student you are able to earn up to $103 per week, from other income sources, without these funds having any effect on the aid that you receive. If at anytime while you are in school you start earning anymore than this amount, it is your responsibility to notify OSAP, and the amount of your financial aid will be reduced accordingly.

OSAP is the Ontario Student Aid Program, and this is a program that most students in Ontario, Canada need to access to help pay for their college education. Applying for college can be exciting – but applying for student aid can be tedious, at best. Below, we easily explain what steps you should take first when applying for OSAP online.

How to Apply for OSAP Online
• Determine which school you will be attending before you apply to OSAP, and which program you will be enrolling in. Not all schools or all programs are approved by OSAP, and you will need to visit the website to ensure that your choice is approved. Just because a school is approved, this is no indication that the OSAP program that you want to participate in through that school is approved.

• Be sure of the academic year that you will need funding for when applying for OSAP 2010. Read the application form. Generally, near the top of the page, you will see which academic school year the application is for. Make sure that you are filling out the right OSAP form. This is a common mistake that many people make – filling out the wrong OSAP application form.

• Know the deadlines before you apply to OSAP Ontario. Deadlines are essential, because OSAP does not have any grace periods. If you miss a deadline, you will miss your OSAP funding for the coming academic year. OSAP deadlines cannot be missed if you expect to get funding through OSAP.

• Have the appropriate documents when you are applying to OSAP. As you work through the application process, the program will be essentially making a list of the documents that you are going to need. Basic documents that everyone should expect to submit include a copy of your social insurance card and your identification card, your birth certificate, proof of address, proof of current income, tax forms, and marriage certificates or divorce papers. Other documents may be required as well, but this is determined by the information that you provide on your OSAP application form, as well as your individual circumstances.

• Get cooperation from other people when applying for OSAP online – it will be needed. If you are a dependent of your parents, they will have to fill out certain sections of your application form. The same is true if you are married or in a common law relationship.

• Make use of the tools provided for you on the OSAP website when you apply to OSAP. Use the Aid Estimator to determine how much your education is going to cost for the coming academic year, how much aid you can expect from OSAP, and how much additional funding you must come up with from other sources. When you apply for student aid through the Ontario Student Aid Program, you may experience a great deal of confusion concerning the OSAP forms for your application. There is the main OSAP application form, and then a whole host of other OSAP forms that are available through the site as well. You need to know how to make your way through these important OSAP forms.

First, you fill out the online 2010 OSAP application form. To do this, you must register for the site, and you must use a valid Social Insurance number. If you do not have such a number, you cannot register to access the OSAP application form. This form can be filled out and submitted online, but it can also be printed out. In order to access all other OSAP forms on the website, you will need a PDF program, such as Adobe Acrobat Reader, which is free to download and use.

It is possible that you may not need any other 2010 OSAP forms on the site. The forms that are available are mainly for those who have had a change in their marital status, those who no longer receive parental support, consent forms for specific people, such as a spouse or parent, forms to update your income, and OSAP forms for specific scholarship or bursary programs that you are eligible for.

Do not fill out the OSAP forms for the bursaries or scholarships – or any other form – before filling out and submitting the initial application for OSAP aid. Once your application has been evaluated, you will be notified as to additional aid that you are eligible for, and if that aid requires a separate application or not.

After you have initially applied for OSAP funding, the OSAP may contact you regarding additional forms that need to be filled out for documentation purposes. Again, these forms will be downloaded to your computer, using a PDF application, and then submitted to the OSAP either through email or postal mail. Most of these OSAP forms cannot be filled out online.

If you are not sure as to whether you need to fill out an additional form for any given situation or not, you should contact the OSAP or your school’s financial aid office to find out if a form is needed, and which form is needed. When you look for the form that you need go to the OSAP website, click OSAP Step-by-Step, click Forms, and then, at the top of that page, make sure that you click the appropriate school year. After this, simply search down through the list for the form that you require.

Aside from the initial OSAP application form, which is not located in the forms section of the website, there are only 38 additional forms to choose from. Each form listed provides information next to the listing that will explain what the form is for – even when the title of the form is self explanatory – so finding the OSAP application form that you require should not be difficult at all. If you are receiving OSAP student aid through the Ontario Student Aid Program, or OSAP, you may wonder how you can continue to receive summer OSAP income through the program during the summer months. There are actually two different ways that you can get or qualify for OSAP summer income.

The first option is to continue to attend school during the summer months. In this way, you can receive your OSAP student aid even during those months, because you are still attending classes. This is the easiest way to obtain OSAP summer income, but that OSAP income must be used to pay tuition, fees, books, supplies, transportation, and living expenses.

These funds are provided to you during the second payment that you receive during the school year – which occurs at the beginning of the second term. Therefore, you must decide that you will be attending OSAP summer school when you initially apply for your funding.

The second way to obtain summer income through the OSAP is through student work programs. These funds, however, do not come from the OSAP. Instead, this work is generally obtained through the financial aid office at your school. These jobs are awarded based on numerous different factors, but for those who qualify, the jobs are awarded on a first come, first serve basis – so you should check into this early.

Another option is to win scholarships or fellowships. Fellowships provide a stipend, as do apprenticeships. Summer apprenticeships can typically be obtained through the department for your program at your school, but again, you must qualify for those positions, and you will have some competition for them as well. Note that scholarships or fellowships may affect the amount of funding that you receive through the OSAP.

You can also get a OSAP summer job that is dependent of school or the OSAP. However, if you do this, you need to check with the OSAP to make sure that the income that you earn will not have a negative affect on your OSAP student aid for the following school year.

It is also important to understand that even if you do not have a summer job, the OSAP expects you to work full time during the summer months. The expected income from this job that you do not have is automatically figured in, in terms of contribution, when the amount of funding that you will receive is determined. For this reason, it is vital that you keep track of the jobs that you apply for during the summer – even if you do not get those jobs – so that adjustments can be made to raise the amount of funding that you receive from the OSAP the following school term.

Otherwise, there really are no direct funds available from the OSAP for summer income unless you are still attending school during the summer months. Remember that the OSAP funding is meant to pay for school, and the expenses surrounding your attendance of school – and even then, they are not meant to provide full funding for your education. Therefore, if you are not in school during the summer, you cannot expect or receive funding for the summer months, unless you take part in some type of student employment or you receive funds for various bursaries, which will affect your award during the regular school term. If you need funding to help pay for college, and you live in Ontario Canada, there are things you need to know for an OSAP student loan. The OSAP is the Ontario Student Aid Program, and through this program, you can obtain a large portion of the funds that you need to pay for your education. It’s for Ontario Canada students only.

1. A student must be absolutely honest in all of your dealings with the OSAP. This includes the information that you supply on your OSAP student application form, and other OSAP forms that you may be required to fill out. Providing false or inaccurate information will usually result in being banned from the program, possibly for life, but at the least for the current academic year. Do not assume that the OSAP does not check the information – it is all checked and verified.

2. The OSAP student loan application will be returned and all documents if they are not the way that they are required to be. Each document that you submit must include your social insurance number, your name and the date, and your signature. Without these inclusions, the OSAP document will not be accepted.

3. Pay close attention to deadlines. It doesn’t matter to the OSAP why a deadline was missed, if it was missed, you are out of luck. There are no grace periods granted, for any reason at all. Make those deadlines!

4. Students must practice patience when dealing with the OSAP. It can take up to six weeks for forms to be processed, but submitting forms online is usually faster. Nothing you say or do is going to speed up the process, so start early.

5. If changes are made in your life, a student must notify OSAP immediately. Failure to notify OSAP about certain changes could prevent you from getting the funding that you require. Changes that a OSAP student must be notified about include name changes, changes in marital status or dependent status, changes in schools or programs, changes in income, and changes of address or telephone information.

6. An OSAP student must have the proper identification. This includes a valid social insurance card and a valid photo identification card. The identification card must be issued by the government. For example, identification cards issued by your school will not satisfy this requirement.

7. OSAP loan funds are only distributed twice each year. The largest bulk of the amount that you are entitled to – 60% – is issued in September, and the remainder is issued in January. There are no exceptions to this.

8. You need the services of your schools financial aid office. This is the most effective way of working with OSAP, and the personnel in the student aid office are experts at working through OSAP student red tape.

9. Check with the financial aid office at your school concerning all of the funding that you receive for your college education. Funding that does not come directly from OSAP for students must be managed separately.

10. Make it your business to know exactly what the OSAP requires from a student who works with them, and meet those requirements. It is your responsibility to do this, and the OSAP will generally only tell you that something is needed once – and if it isn’t provided, your funding is denied or cut off.

Being a student and living in Ontario Canada attending college is the biggest criteria when applying for OSAP eligibility funding, but you must meet the other OSAP eligibility criteria in order to obtain OSAP funds. Obtaining a higher education can be exceedingly expensive. Thankfully, if you are a resident of Ontario, Canada, you can get help from the OSAP program , or the Ontario Student Aid Program. This is a needs based program that covers a multitude of financing sources for your education such as Canada student loans, bursaries, grants and Canadian scholarships.

OSAP Eligibility Guidelines

First, you must be academically eligible when applying for OSAP. This means that your grades must be satisfactory, but there is more to it. After you have obtained OSAP funding, in order to remain eligible for that funding, you must continue to keep your grades up, and you must avoid frequent program changes, dropping classes, or repeating programs. Any of these circumstances could affect your OSAP eligibility.

Next, you must not be otherwise OSAP ineligible when applying to OSAP. You cannot have defaulted on a previous student loan. If you were overpaid for a grant or bursary, and you have not repaid the overpayment, you will not be OSAP eligible. If you provide information that is false, or otherwise incorrect – or fail to provide information on your application, you will be ineligible. If you have been convicted of a criminal offense of certain types, including fraud or theft, you will not be OSAP eligible. You are wasting your time if you apply for OSAP funding if you have one of the above issues because their are no OSAP exceptions when qualifying for OSAP.

You must make sure that the income that you report on your OSAP application matches the income reported to the Canada Revenue Agency when you apply to OSAP, as this OSAP application form information will be checked. If you have declared bankruptcy, you will most likely be ineligible. Additionally, you must pass the credit check that is done by the OSAP. If you are under investigation for any type of fraud or other criminal offense, you will be ineligible for OSAP funding– even if you are innocent.

OSAP Eligibility for Colleges

Even if you pass all of these OSAP eligibility criteria, there is an additional criterion that must be met – but this criterion pertains mostly to the school and the program that you will be enrolling in. The school must be approved by the OSAP, and additionally, the program of study must also be approved. The program must be at least twelve weeks long, and it must lead to a diploma, degree, or certificate. Most programs are approved, but not all schools are approved. Professional degree programs are not approved. You can find out if the school and program of your choice is approved through the OSAP website.

These are just the general guidelines; there are additional OSAP eligibility criteria that must be met for different programs without the OSAP, such as bursaries and scholarships. Each of these programs will have their own set of eligibility criteria that must be met. You need to check the eligibility requirements for those programs, but being ineligible for certain programs under the OSAP does not make you ineligible for all programs under the OSAP, and it is important to realize this.

In most cases, you can fit the eligibility criteria that are set for OSAP student aid in Ontario, Canada, but remember that this is a needs based program, which means that you must also fit the income criteria. You absolutely must be honest about your income and the income of your parents, spouse, or common law partner when you fill out the OSAP application. Failure to do this can be construed as fraud and you will end up paying your OSAP funding if you are approved under these false circumstances when initially applying for OSAP funding.

Before applying for OSAP funding, read over the general requirements to make sure that you meet those requirements in advance. Most people don’t think about repaying the OSAP loan, but instead focus only on getting the loan. Paying it back is the hard part, and this is something that you need to consider before applying.

The next step is to make use of the OSAP website tools section. In this section, you can apply for your OSAP loan program online, check the status of your loan, use an aid estimator to help you figure out how much aid you need or will get, speak to a loan counselor, use the OSAP online aid finder to help locate additional sources of funding, use the repayment OSAP calculator to figure out how much your payments will be after graduation, and how long it will take to repay the loans, search for schools, and connect with student awards and Scholarships Canada for additional funding as well.

After you have applied for funding, you will need to use the OSAP Step by Step section of the online website to find additional forms that you may need for your application process. Near the top of that page, make sure that you click on the appropriate school year, as it applies to you. Other sections of the OSAP website include Contacts, Help, Postsecondary Education, and Explore Government. Of these sections, the only two that you may need are the Contacts section and the Help section, should you run into problems during your application process. You can use the Postsecondary Education section for a listing of schools, categorized by Private Career Colleges, Universities, and Colleges of Applied Arts and Technology. If you are an international student, there is a section there for you as well. You need to know how to use important OSAP contact information for specific problems when you apply for OSAP funding, or the Ontario Student Aid Program because you may run into specific problems you cannot figure out on your own. You could also have specific problems after you have started receiving the OSAP Ontario funds. For this reason and others you may encounter, you need to know how to use the OSAP contact section in the OSAP website to get quick answers.

When you visit the OSAP website, you will see three different ways to contact the OSAP agency for help. The first is to contact the OSAP directly, for all problems related to the OSAP. This contact information is generally supplied for students who are initially applying for OSAP funding, and for those who are currently receiving those funds. If you are in the process of repaying your student loans, or about to enter that process, your contact for specific problems would not be with the OSAP. Instead, you would need to contact the National Student Loans Service Centre, or NSLSC, at 888-815-4514. This is the second way to get help with specific problems, as they relate to your student loans. In some cases, you can contact the NSLSC even if you are still attending school.

Another section of the OSAP website, listed under the Help section, is ‘I Need Help With…’ Unfortunately, this portion of the website is not set up at this time. However, once it is operational, students will find this portion of the site to be very beneficial, as it will list either OSAP contact information or information regarding specific problems.

There is a section for help concerning technical problems that you may encounter with the OSAP website. This help can be obtained on the OSAP website, under the Help Section. You can click ‘Technical Help’ under the ‘Help Section.’ If you are having issues with security or logging in, click on Security & Log In Help.

If your problem is not technical, you will find that most of your issues concerning your OSAP student aid can be addressed and handled through the financial aid office at your school. This pertains to students who are already receiving funds. Those who are initially applying should still contact with the OSAP directly.

The contact information for the financial aid office at your school can be obtained through the OSAP website. Click Contacts, and then School Financial Aid Offices. From there, click on the appropriate section – for public schools, private schools, or schools outside of Ontario, and find your school in the listing that is provided.

When contacting anyone for help or OSAP information, do so in the correct way. The old adage that you catch more flies with honey is absolutely true. Be polite, and do not be overly demanding. Treat the people that you talk to with absolute respect and patience, and you will find that your problems are addressed more quickly. You will also find that if you have not contacted the right office or division, if you are nice, the person on the other end of the phone is more likely to find and provide you with the correct OSAP contact information that you require.

Otherwise, you probably will not need OSAP contact information for specific problems. Instead, you can usually find any information or help that you require on the Ontario OSAP website. The OSAP application form is really not that difficult to complete, especially the OSAP application online. Although filling out applications for college and for student aid can be extremely stressful and time consuming, it becomes more stressful when you find out that your aid was denied because you didn’t fill out the application completely, or correctly. You need to know how to fill out the Ontario OSAP application form the right way the very first time.

The 2010 OSAP application form is available online, so it is easy to access. You should put aside plenty of time to fill out the online OSAP application form – you do not want to rush through this process. Note that because this is an online application, you can save your work and return to it later. Applying online is free, however if you opt to apply using a paper OSAP application form, there is a $10 fee.

Start by ensuring that you are using the right OSAP forms. There is a form for fulltime students and for part time students. A full time student is defined as a student who is taking at least 60% of a full course load – unless you are disabled, in which case you must be taking at least 40% of a full course load to be considered a fulltime student.

This OSAP application online will be used to determine your eligibility for numerous OSAP programs. These programs include the Canada-Ontario Integrated Student Loan, the Ontario Student Opportunity Grant, The Ontario Access Grant, the Queen Elizabeth II Aiming for the Top Scholarship, the Ontario Access Grant for Crown Wards, and others. Your eligibility for the Ontario Special Bursary Program, or OSBP, will also be determined with this OSAP application, but if you are eligible for the OSBP program, you may have to fill out additional applications at a later date. The Canada OSAP application form is fairly simple in terms of the questions that are asked. You will need to have specific information available for your 2010 OSAP application form. You will need verification of your income and your citizenship. If you are married, in a common law relationship, or a dependent of your parents or guardian, you will need their income information as well – and there are certain parts of the application that will need to be filled out by these individuals, as it applies to your situation.

Make sure that you are filling out the right OSAP form for the school and OSAP program that you want to attend. You do not have to be accepted by that school before applying for aid, but you should have at least already applied to the school for admission. Check the year for the OSAP online application form that you are filling out as well. The 2010 OSAP application should be used if you will be starting school between August 1, 2010 and July 31, 2011. The biggest problems seem to arise from students using the wrong application form.

Some questions on the form may not apply to you. Those questions should be skipped. However, be careful not to skip questions that do apply to you, just because you don’t know the answer. You may be surprised to find that the OSAP Ontario Canada program and MTCU can do it better for you in terms of helping to fund your education when you are seeking ways to pay for a higher education.
